There over 3 million Muslims in the UK and over 1.8 billion Muslims in the world for which the month of Ramadan is a special time of the year.
Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar and is one of the holiest months for Muslims. It is the Muslim belief that the first verses of the Islamic Holy Book, the Qur’an, were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad during this month.
Muslims from all walks of life fast in Ramadan. During Ramadan Muslims will refrain from food and drink from the hours of sunrise and sunset. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, along with Faith, Prayer, Almsgiving and Pilgrimage which form the foundation of Muslim life.
In Ramadan Muslims seek to strengthen their spirituality and to feel a closer and deeper connection with Allah (God). It is an opportunity to practice self-purification and self-improvement. It is a time of spiritual discipline, extra prayer, patience, increased charity and intense study of the Qur’an.
The act of fasting is also considered as a way of increasing gratitude and becoming more compassionate to those in need. Donations in the form of money, food and drink to the poor and less fortunate are encouraged.
The end of Ramadan is marked with a joyous celebration called Eid al-Fitr (“The Festival of Breaking the Fast”) celebrating a successful month of fasting and worship. Eid al-Fitr lasts up to three days and begins with the first sighting of the new crescent moon.
Eid morning prayers take place at mosques and then often the rest of the day is spent with family and friends in celebration, exchanging gifts and enjoying food and drink.
BLZ Solicitors would like to wish all Muslims a Peaceful Ramadan and Eid Mubarak (“A Blessed Eid”).
